Cycling and EBikes are booming in Manchester as one million journey record is smashed one month ahead of schedule
In a three-week period from late September to late October, over 6,000 people used the Oxford Road (Manchester) cycle and ebike lane on nine separate days, setting a new usage record.
Notably, the cycle lane celebrated its one-millionth journey on October 20, a month ahead of the previous record. Since its establishment in 2017, the cycleway for bikes and ebikes, has been a flagship project for the city`s ambition to promote sustainable transportation as part of its plan to become a carbon-neutral city by 2038 of which EBikes are an important part.
This transportation route has also greatly improved provisions for pedestrians, expanded public space, and enhanced green areas. It aligns with the city`s goal of achieving 90% of journeys to the city center via public transport, walking, or cycling by 2040 making ebikes more valuable than ever and helped by Moor Ebikes Cycle to Work scheme.
Analysis shows that Manchester`s transportation network is now operating 15% above pre-pandemic averages, a significant accomplishment given the city`s size compared to London.
The Manchester Active Travel Strategy and Investment Plan, introduced by the Council in the past year, aims to improve cycling and ebike access and promote alternative modes of travel.
Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Environment and Transport, and Dame Sarah Storey, Active Travel Commissioner, both expressed their enthusiasm for the positive developments in cycling and walking infrastructure.
Greater Manchester is working on creating the UK`s largest cycling and walking network as part of The Bee Network, also incorporating a wide network of safe routes for ebikes, along with supporting community-based initiatives to encourage physical activity through cycling, walking, and wheeling.
